Ten Ukrainian water utilities have joined the Water for the Future: Modern Standards for Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation project.
The project will result in a comprehensive document defining standards for the design and construction of water supply, wastewater and wastewater treatment facilities in Ukraine. The standards will be developed in collaboration with European partners.
In the future, compliance with the developed standards will be a prerequisite for effectively attracting global capital for the implementation of complex water supply development projects. The adoption and use of the new standards will ensure the reliability, safety and adequate quality of all projects, while creating a transparent and competitive market. This will be the necessary basis for the implementation of the Sectoral Plan for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction in the field of water infrastructure.
The project will bring together experts from the Kyivvodokanal, Chernihivvodokanal, Zhytomyrvodokanal, Rivneoblvodokanal, Ternopilvodokanal, Lvivvodokanal, Umanvodokanal, Lutskvodokanal, Sumy, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia water utilities, as well as representatives of the Association of Water Utilities of Ukraine, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, the Reform Support Office of MinRegion of Ukraine and the Technical Committee for Standardisation visited Slovakia on 12-13 October to participate in a specialised workshop.
- As part of the visit, the members of the delegation visited:
- Sewage treatment plants (Rožňava and Bardejov)
- Sewage pumping station (Petrovce and Laborcom)
- Disinfection station (Bardejov)
- City sewerage reconstruction (Bardejov)
As part of the discussion, Ukrainian specialists communicated and exchanged experiences with their Slovak counterparts:
- Eduard Wallusch, Chief Engineer, North Slovak Water and Sewerage Company, Žilina,
- Karol Kalinák, Director of the Pryšov Branch of the East Slovak Water Company, Košice,
- Stanislav Ševčík, Chief Engineer of the East Slovak Water Company, Košice,
- Josef Kiska, Chief Technician of LK Pumpservice, Bratislava (pumping technologies),
- Jan Pavlik, Director of the E-SOL Project Organisation, Bratislava (certified water engineer with 20 years of professional experience),
- etc.
The development of comprehensive design and construction standards is a particularly important issue, as it demonstrates compliance with the principles of Ukraine’s recovery adopted at the Lugano International Conference and the Action Plan for the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
