Uman Vodokanal has joined the Water for the Future: Modern Standards for Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation project. The project will result in the development of a comprehensive document that will define standards for the design and construction of water supply, sewerage and wastewater treatment facilities in Ukraine. The standards will be developed in collaboration with European partners.
In the future, compliance with the developed standards will be a prerequisite for effectively attracting global capital for the implementation of complex water supply development projects. The adoption and use of the new standards will ensure the reliability, safety and adequate quality of all projects, while creating a transparent and competitive market. This will be the necessary basis for the implementation of the Sectoral Plan for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction in the field of water infrastructure.
As part of the project, Serhii Tereshchuk, Director of Uman Vodokanal, together with the company’s Chief Engineer Mykhailo Chemeris and colleagues from nine other Ukrainian water utilities and representatives of the Association of Water Utilities of Ukraine, visited Slovakia on 12-13 October to participate in a technical seminar. As part of the visit, the Ukrainian delegation also saw the operation of the Rožnava and Bardejov wastewater treatment plants, the Petrovce nad Laborec wastewater pumping station and the Bardejov wastewater disinfection and reconstruction plant.
According to Sergiy Tereshchuk, the development of comprehensive design and construction standards is particularly urgent, as it demonstrates compliance with the principles of Ukraine’s recovery adopted at the international conference in Lugano, as well as the Action Plan for the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
“Today, the Water Strategy of Ukraine until 2030 and the Law on Water Disposal and Wastewater Treatment have been approved, but they require the development of a number of regulatory documents, recommendations and new construction standards. And these are the documents necessary for practical implementation that we will receive as a result of the project with our European colleagues in April – May 2024,”

The Water for the Future: Modern Standards for Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation project is funded by the Slovak Agency for International Development (Slovak Aid). The project is initiated by the Slovak company ESOL s.r.o. The project partner in Ukraine is the Ukrainian Association “Ukrvodokanalekologiya”.
